AC Keeps Tripping the Breaker in Fort Smith, AR? Here’s Why

We get a version of this call every week in September: “My AC was fine, then the breaker tripped. I reset it, it ran for twenty minutes, and it tripped again.” Fort Smith is still pushing the mid-90s this time of year, and an AC that keeps kicking the breaker is not a problem that fixes itself. A breaker that trips once might be a fluke. A breaker that trips twice is your system telling you something is drawing more current than it should.

Here’s how to think it through, what you can safely check yourself, and where the line is between a cheap fix and an expensive one.

Reset It Once. Not Five Times.

A breaker trips because something on that circuit pulled more amps than the breaker is rated for, or because there’s a short. Resetting it one time is reasonable. A lightning flicker or a power blip during an afternoon storm can do it. If it holds, keep an eye on it.

If it trips again within minutes or hours, stop resetting it. Every hard restart on a struggling compressor is wear you can’t undo, and repeatedly forcing a breaker that’s tripping for a real reason is how wiring insulation gets cooked. Flip it off and leave it off until someone looks at it.

What You Can Check Before You Call

A few things are worth a look on your own, with the system off at the breaker.

Look at the outdoor unit. If the coil is packed with cottonwood fluff, grass clippings, or dirt, the unit can’t shed heat, pressure climbs, and the compressor works harder than it should. On a lot of Fort Smith brick ranches the condenser sits on the west side of the house baking in the afternoon sun, which makes a dirty coil even worse. A gentle rinse from the inside out with a garden hose, not a pressure washer, helps more than most people expect.

Check the filter inside. A choked filter starves airflow across the indoor coil, and starved airflow eventually shows up outside as a system straining.

Watch the outdoor fan the next time you turn it on. If the fan hums but doesn’t spin, or spins slowly, that’s a fan motor or a capacitor problem, and running it that way is what trips the breaker.

Look at the breaker itself. If it feels hot to the touch or the panel smells like burnt plastic, do not reset it. Call us, and plan on an electrician too.

The Usual Suspects, Cheapest to Most Expensive

A weak or failed run capacitor is the most common cause we find. The capacitor gives the compressor and fan motor the push they need to start. When it gets weak, the motor pulls a big surge of current trying to start and the breaker says no. It’s a fast, relatively inexpensive fix.

A dirty condenser coil is next. High pressure means high amps. We clean it properly, check the pressures, and often that’s the whole story.

A failing condenser fan motor draws more and more current as the bearings go. You’ll often hear it before it fails, a grinding or a hum with no spin.

Loose or burnt wiring at the contactor or disconnect can cause an intermittent short. Cheap part, but it needs to be found and fixed before it starts a fire.

A weak breaker does happen. Breakers wear out, especially in older panels in houses that have been through thirty summers. This one is an electrician’s job, and we’ll tell you if that’s what we’re seeing.

A compressor with shorted windings is the one nobody wants. It pulls locked-rotor amps and trips the breaker every time. On an older system this is usually the point where a repair-versus-replace conversation makes sense.

What Waiting Actually Costs

Every cycle of reset, run, trip puts stress on the most expensive part in the system. A capacitor left alone until the compressor gives up turns a small repair into a big one. And in September, waiting also means a house sitting at 84 degrees through the hottest part of the day.
