Why Go Smart

What a Smart Thermostat Actually Does for You

It’s not a gadget — set up properly, it’s the cheapest efficiency upgrade you can make to a heating and cooling system.

Lower bills without thinking about it

Schedules and occupancy sensing cut runtime when the house is empty or asleep — the biggest waste in most homes.

Control from anywhere

Coming home early, left for a week, or a tenant calls? Adjust it from your phone.

Catches problems early

Alerts when the system isn’t reaching temperature, the filter is due, or the house is getting too humid.

Even temperatures

Remote room sensors stop the back bedroom from freezing while the hallway thermostat says everything’s fine.

Works with heat pumps — if wired right

Heat pumps, dual-fuel, and multi-stage systems need correct wiring and configuration. That’s the part DIY installs get wrong.

Voice and smart-home control

Alexa, Google, and Apple Home integration for the people who want it. Simple buttons for the people who don’t.

Humidity control

Pair it with a whole-home humidifier or dehumidifier and let the thermostat manage both.

Usage reports

See how many hours your system ran and when — useful for catching a failing system before it dies.

The C-wire problem

Many River Valley homes built before the mid-2000s have no common (C) wire at the thermostat. Smart thermostats need constant power, and the workarounds that ship in the box cause short cycling and dead batteries. We run or adapt the wiring properly so the thermostat — and your equipment — works the way it should.

What to Expect

How a Thermostat Install Works

Usually one visit, and you walk away knowing how to use it.

  1. Pick the right thermostat

We check your system type — gas, heat pump, dual-fuel, multi-stage, zoned — and recommend a model that actually supports it. Bring your own or let us supply it.

  2. Wiring and power

We verify the C-wire, fix or run wiring as needed, and check the control board so nothing gets damaged.

  3. Install and configure

Mounted, wired, configured for your equipment (this is where staging, fan, and aux heat settings matter), and connected to your Wi-Fi.

  4. We show you how to use it

Schedules, the app, sensors, and what the alerts mean. We don’t leave until you can run it.

Questions

Smart Thermostat FAQs

Can I install a smart thermostat myself?

Some people do. The trouble shows up on homes without a C-wire, on heat pumps, and on multi-stage systems — wrong wiring can short-cycle the equipment or run expensive aux heat constantly. If you’re not sure what you have, a professional install is cheap insurance.

Will a smart thermostat work with my heat pump?

Yes, with the right model and correct configuration. Heat pumps need the thermostat to manage the reversing valve, defrost, and backup heat properly — we set all of that up and test it in both modes.

Which brand is best?

It depends on your system and what you want from it. We install Nest, ecobee, Honeywell, and other major brands and will tell you which fits your equipment — not which one pays us more.

Do I have to buy the thermostat from you?

No. Bring your own and we’ll install it, or we can supply one. Either way we verify it’s compatible before anything comes off the wall.

Will it really lower my bills?

For most homes, yes — mainly from not heating or cooling an empty house. How much depends on your schedule and how the old thermostat was being used. We won’t promise a number we can’t back up.

My smart thermostat keeps rebooting or losing power. Can you fix it?

Yes. That’s almost always a missing C-wire or a marginal power adapter. We fix the power problem properly instead of swapping thermostats.

Ready to Upgrade Your Thermostat?

Call and tell us what system you have. We’ll recommend the right thermostat, install it properly, and show you how to use it.
