8 Spaces That Are Perfect for Ductless
Mini-splits aren't the right answer for every job — but for these specific use cases they're often the smartest, cheapest, and cleanest option. Here's what we install most.
Shops & Workshops
Detached shops, work bays, and out-buildings without ductwork. Insulated metal buildings cool fast with the right mini-split.
Single or multi-zoneBarndominiums
Open-concept barndominiums are tough for central HVAC. Multi-zone mini-splits handle the loft, living area, and bedrooms independently.
Multi-zone shinesGarages & Finished Bays
Working in a 110°F garage in July or a 30°F garage in January? Mini-splits make detached or attached garages comfortable year-round.
Single zone, fast installMobile Homes
Replace failing central units in mobile homes with mini-splits — often cheaper, more efficient, and easier to maintain long-term.
Common in our areaHome Additions
Bonus rooms, sunrooms, in-law suites, additions over a garage — anywhere extending existing ductwork doesn't make sense.
No duct modificationBonus Rooms Over Garage
The room your central AC never quite cools. A small mini-split solves it permanently and costs less than ductwork modification.
Most common jobHome Offices & Server Rooms
Working from home? A server rack running hot? Mini-splits give you precise temperature control without affecting the rest of the house.
Quiet operationOlder Homes Without Ducts
1940s and earlier Fort Smith homes built without ductwork. A multi-zone mini-split is way cheaper than retrofitting central HVAC.
Whole-home optionWhy We Install a Lot of TCL.
Mitsubishi is the most-marketed mini-split brand in the country. Their units are excellent — and they cost a premium for the name. TCL makes a comparable mini-split at a fairer price point, with the same essential features: inverter compressors, multi-zone capability, heat down to about 5°F, quiet operation, and reliable warranties. That's what we install most often across Fort Smith, Poteau, and the surrounding River Valley.
That said, we install whatever makes sense for your project. Want a premium Mitsubishi or Daikin? We'll install it. Building a high-end barndominium and want best-in-class? Done. Outfitting a shop on a budget and want value? TCL is the smart call. We won't talk you into paying extra for a name when a more affordable brand performs just as well — that's not how we operate.
Whatever brand you pick, we install it right. Proper line set, vacuum to spec, torque-checked connections, leak test, and clean line set covers. Every mini-split install gets the same workmanship regardless of brand or budget.
6 Reasons Mini-Splits Beat Window Units
A window AC is cheap up front but expensive over time. Loud, inefficient, ugly, vulnerable to break-ins, and they only cool one room while heating the rest of your electric bill. Here's why mini-splits are the better long-term call.
3x More Efficient
Inverter-driven mini-splits use a fraction of the electricity a window AC pulls. Lower monthly bill, especially during Arkansas summers when AC runs 12+ hours a day.
Whisper Quiet
Window units sound like a jet engine. Mini-split indoor air handlers run at 19–30 decibels — quieter than a refrigerator. Sleep, work, or watch TV without raising your voice.
Heats AND Cools
One unit handles summer AND winter — window units only cool. Mini-split heat pumps efficiently heat down to about 5°F, well below Fort Smith and Poteau winter lows.
You Keep Your Window
Mini-splits mount to the wall — you don't lose a window. The outdoor unit sits outside on a pad. Your view, light, and security stay intact.
Looks Professional
A well-installed mini-split with line set hide covers looks like the house was built with it. A window unit dropping condensate water down the side of the house — not so much.
15–20 Year Lifespan
A quality mini-split lasts 15-20 years with basic maintenance. A window unit's lifespan is 5-10 if you're lucky. Cost-per-year, mini-splits win big.

How Many Zones Do You Need?
A "zone" is one indoor air handler — the unit on the wall (or ceiling) that actually delivers the conditioned air. The outdoor condenser is shared. Most mini-split projects fall into one of two camps:
Single-zone (1 indoor unit): The right call for one room or one space — bonus room, garage bay, sunroom, shop. Cheaper to install, more efficient than multi-zone systems pound-for-pound, and easier to size correctly. Most of the jobs we do are single-zone.
Multi-zone (2–5 indoor units): The right call for barndominiums, whole homes, or any space where you need independent temperature control across multiple rooms. One outdoor condenser feeds all the indoor heads. More flexible, more expensive, slightly less efficient than running separate single-zone systems but far more practical to install and maintain.
Not sure which one you need? Tell us about your space and we'll recommend the right setup — including whether a mini-split is even the right answer or if a different system makes more sense for your situation.
What Goes Into a Proper Mini-Split Install
A bad mini-split install will leak refrigerant, run noisy, ice up, or quit working a year later. Here's what a Clark HVAC install actually involves — the difference between a job done right and a job done fast.
1. Load Calculation
BTU sizing based on square footage, insulation, ceiling height, sun exposure, and how the space is used. Oversized units short-cycle and waste energy.
2. Placement Planning
Indoor head positioned for proper airflow coverage. Outdoor condenser placed on a level pad, away from bedrooms, with proper clearance for service.
3. Clean Line Set Routing
Shortest practical refrigerant line run with proper bend radius. Insulated all the way. Wall penetration sealed against weather, insects, and air leaks.
4. Code-Compliant Electrical
Disconnect at the outdoor unit. Wire gauge matched to system load. Whip and conduit installed clean. Permits pulled when required.
5. Vacuum & Pressure Test
Lines pulled down to a proper vacuum (250 microns), held to verify no leaks, then charged to manufacturer spec. Skipping this step kills systems early.
6. Line Set Hide Cover
Plastic line set hide cover (white or black to match siding) over the refrigerant line run. Makes the install look professional, not jury-rigged.

What the R-32 / R-454B Transition Means for You
Starting January 1, 2026, all new residential heat pump systems — including mini-splits — must use refrigerants with a global warming potential (GWP) of 700 or lower under the EPA's Technology Transition Rule. That means new units now use R-32 or R-454B instead of the older R-410A that was standard for the last 15+ years.
What this means for you as a buyer: Most new mini-splits being sold and installed in 2026 use R-32 (which TCL, Daikin, and many others have standardized on) or R-454B (favored by Carrier, Trane, and some others). Both refrigerants are more environmentally friendly and slightly more efficient than R-410A — but they're also classified as A2L (mildly flammable), which means stricter installation codes and proper certified technicians.
The practical impact: Some 2026 quotes are running higher than last fall's prices as contractors clear out old R-410A inventory and transition to new refrigerants. Also, that $2,000 federal heat pump tax credit you may have counted on expired December 31, 2025 — so the federal tax break on mini-splits is gone for now.
What we do about it: We install current-code-compliant systems with the right refrigerants for your equipment, pull a proper vacuum, charge to spec, and document everything for your manufacturer warranty. We don't install on the cheap with old R-410A units pulled from a warehouse — that creates warranty and service problems down the road when those units age and refrigerant gets harder to source.
Got questions about the refrigerant transition? Call (918) 839-3734 — we're happy to walk you through how it affects your specific project.
